Municipality to begin accepting truck-hauled sewage at Clanwilliam-Erickson Wastewater Lagoon

The Municipality is aware that truck-hauled wastewater from outside the Municipality of Harrison Park is no longer accepted at Onanole lagoon, and may only be accepted temporarily at the Sandy Lake lagoon. We are thankful to the Municipality of Harrison Park for providing this temporary measure, recognizing that infrastructure management is a constant challenge.

We have been working to deliver an alternate solution to residents, and can now announce that the Clanwilliam-Erickson lagoon will be made available to all municipal residents.
This announcement comes with several caveats.
  1. We need to make some improvements to the truck access location before accepting trucked wastewater. We expect it will be ready in the first days of July – possibly sooner.
  2. The Clanwilliam-Erickson lagoon was designed for the urban population of Erickson, prior to municipal amalgamation. It was not designed for the resident and seasonal population of the entire amalgamated municipality. Therefore, we will have to actively monitor and manage levels, test and discharge more frequently, and if the lagoon starts to fill too fast, we may have to stop accepting trucked wastewater.
  3. Our Environment Act licence does not permit us to accept septage (from septic tanks) – only sewage from holding tanks. We have requested a temporary waiver of this clause in our licence, but it has not been approved yet.
  4. The lagoon was paid for, and continues to be maintained at the expense of, Erickson’s utility customers. Municipal tax dollars do not and cannot contribute to the lagoon. Therefore, Council has instituted a dumping fee of $50 per truckload, which will be used to fund operations and maintenance, sludge removal, and work towards implementing a long-term wastewater solution.

We are in the process of determining what the long-term solution will look like, and we are having encouraging conversations with higher levels of government and other partners in the region. We are moving as quickly as possible to design the most efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective solution that we can, and we will keep you informed as we make progress.

Thank you for your patience and support while we work on this extremely important issue. If you have questions or comments, please contact the municipal office or email [email protected].
